In the middle of the peninsula of Athos, established the 9th century in a charming verdant area, is situated the capital of the monastic community, Karyes.
The church of Protatos is the most important building of the capital. Its name origins from the axiom of the First which is the oldest catholic of the Mountain (built in the beginning of the 10th century) and belongs to all the monasteries of Athos.
Behind the church is the bell- tower, that has been built by Seraphim the First in 1534, while on the other side there is situated the building of the Holy Community which is used as the Head office of the legislative and administrative divisions of the city.
On the north-eastern side of Karyes there is situated the "cluster" of Saint Andrew that houses the School. For the last sixty years hundreds of young men have been prepared for the monastic life in this school.
In the town of Karyes there are also the so-called "Konakia" which house representatives of all 19 monasteries (apart from the monastery of Koutloumousion which is very close to Karyes) as well as shops, workshops and public services such as a bank, post office, customs office and so on.
